PHP Broken Website - Benefits Upgrading to PHP 7.2

How do I fix my broken WordPress site after my ISP has updated to PHP 7.2?

If your WordPress site has stopped working after your ISP updated to PHP 7.1 or greater, then we can help you to get your website up and running.

Many ISPs are forcing upgrades to PHP 7.2.

As the minimum PHP requirements for WordPress core increase, many plugins and themes will be incompatible if they are not upgraded for the newer version of PHP.

Old versions of plugins will not continue to receive security patches, making your website vulnerable to security breaches by hackers.

WordPress PHP Recommended Requirements

To run WordPress they recommend your host supports:

  • PHP version 7.3 or greater.
  • MySQL version 5.6 or greater OR MariaDB version 10.1 or greater.
  • HTTPS support

Worpdress recommends Apache or Nginx as the most robust and featureful server for running WordPress, but any server that supports PHP and MySQL will do.

Note: If you are in a legacy environment where you only have older PHP or MySQL versions, WordPress also works with PHP 5.6.20+ and MySQL 5.0+, but these versions have reached official End Of Life and as such may expose your site to security vulnerabilities.

Why is PHP 7.2 better?

It’s important that your website code is kept up to date. ISPs (Hosting Platforms) are responsible for the infrastructure where your site is hosted, however, as the website owner, you or your web designer is responsible for keeping the website up to date with latest versions.

Security updates for older PHP versions have ended, and most ISPs will not be able to support these older versions on their hosting platform.
If your website is still making use of PHP 5.6 or anything from 7.0 below, in terms of using older versions of WordPress or Plugins, then your site will most likely break if the ISP upgrades to PHP 7.2.
